When is Friendship Day

Friends, buddies, chums, pals – call them what you will, but each of us will have to agree that these lovely people are the ones who make our lives really worth living. Think about it, your colleagues, your neighbors, your old schoolmates, friends really touch our lives in many millions of ways. Friendship Day is a celebration of this wonderful relationship that goes beyond any barriers like age, sex, religion or nationality.

Friendship Day is celebrated on every first Sunday of August and is a fitting tribute to friendship. It was initially declared a holiday in honor of friends by the U.S. Congress in 1935. The idea caught on and now we have people the world over enjoying the day with their friends. In 1997, the United Nations appointed the beloved and friendly cartoon character - Winnie - the Pooh as the world's Ambassador of Friendship.

Friendship has been a beautiful relationship that has been cherished since the advent of mankind. Man being a social animal has always believed in making friends and there are numerous tales of true friendship that are told and retold all over again. Friends come in all sizes, shapes and colors but what’s important is how well you vibe.

Friendship Day is celebrated by exchanging cards, gifts or flowers with friends. However, if you are unable to meet your friends in person, don’t forget to send them egreetings or smses that show you care and cherish this wonderful bond. You can even dedicate a song to them on your favorite radio or TV station.

Friendship bands or bracelets are available in an array of colors and designs. From plain colored ones with a message to beaded or embossed ones, you’ll find something to suit the taste of your friend.

The whole idea of giving something to your friend is to make it personal. So do make it a point to include a special message – it could be a reminder of a good time you both shared or a joke that both of you cracked up over, or even an old picture when you were kids.

Make your friend feel special by planning something unique. A picnic, a cake with a special message for your friend on it, a special friendship poem on your friendship, a scrapbook with pictures taken together, a giant teddy bear with a special message, just a few ideas to get your mind ticking. The key is to get original and make this a day to remember throughout life. Long live friendship!
